Mel Zajac International - day 1 prelims

This morning's session at the Mel Zajac meet was our most successful prelims ever at a senior national event.

Starting off the day in the 200m Backstroke, we had Luke Reilly qualify in 24th for tonight's 'C' final. Luke moved up from the 42nd. Other good swims in the backstroke were Meghan Kwiatkowski moving from 69th to 55th, Elliott Lee going from 52nd to 35th, and Jon Kraft going from 63rd to 52nd. Luke's swim broke the former club record from of 2:20.11 from 1994 held by a certain "Tom Rushton".

We have two swimmers in the 'C' final of the women's 100m breaststroke; Micaela Kwiatkowski came in at 17th taking the top spot (moving up from 21st), and Maya Hiebert had a big move coming up from 54th to take the 23rd fastest spot. Kiana Beaton also had a great swim moving from 51st to 35th overall.

In the 200m Freestyle we do not have any finalists, but some good performances include Meghan Kwiatkowski again moving up from 69th to 51st, Nicole Currie with a big move going from 109th to 79th, Jon Kraft going from 83rd to 42nd, Evan Broderick going from 82nd to 45th.

The 400 IM was our strongest event of the morning as Evan Broderick swam to a 3rd place spot in the 'A' final tonight. He will go head-to-head against Canadian record holder and 3 time Olympian, Brian Johns. Also swimming a strong race was Luke Reilly who qualified 9th for the pole position in tonight's 'B' final. Moving up dramatically was Alyssa von Ende going from 51st seed to finish 35th. Both Luke and Evan beat the club records this morning in the event. Luke smashed his own record by over 12 seconds, narrowing in on the 'BC' record held by 2009 Worlds team member, Anders McIntyre. Evan broke a 13 year old club record also formerly held by one  'Tom Rushton'.

Noemie Thomas and Nick Quenville snagged second swims in the 50m butterfly. Noemie will head into tonight's 'A' final in 4th position behind US Olympic gold medalist, Dana Vollmer. Nick swam a strong race to qualify for the 'B' final in the men's event. Maya Hiebert moved up from 91st to 78th in the event.

Tonight also plays host to the 4x 100 Freestyle relay, which will feature Meghan Kwiatkowski on the 'A' team, facing strong competition from both the University of Calgary, and Island Swimming. We also have Nicole Currie, Sidney Peake, Mckenzie Summers, Ryan Anderson, Jon Kraft, Evan Broderick, Vito Zou and Nick Quenville swimming legs on the 'B' and 'C' relays in the finals.

This evening's finals begin at 5:30pm, and will be webcase live on swimming canada's site. Admission to the event is also free.
