The first day of finals at the 2010 Mel Zajac jnr International
did not disappoint as two of our Winskill Dolphin swimmers stepped
onto the podium at the senior international competition.
First up in the 200m backstroke, Luke Reilly lowered his freshly
minted club record with a 2:14.67. Luke finished in 20th place in
the event after entering the competition seeded 42nd.
In the 100m breaststroke Maya Hiebert and Micaela Kwiatkowski
swam in the 'C' final just off their best times. Both swimmers
looked strong in the in-season performance that will prepare them
well for tomorrow's 200m event, and next month's USA Grand Prix in
Los Angeles where they will face the 200m breaststroke
Olympic gold medalist, Rebecca Soni, in her home pool.
The 400 IM was an exciting race for our swimmers as Luke Reilly
was scratched into the 'A' final, replacing an injured Brian Johns.
Luke took up the centre lane in the final and swam to another best
time, club record and UBC Dolphin record of 4:40.99, placing 7th
overall in the event. Evan Broderick smashed his senior club mark
and narrowly missed the 15-17 UBC Dolphin record with a huge PB of
4:35.34. Evan's swim gained him the third place finish and podium
spot along with coveted silver dolphin award unique to the Zajac
meet.
In the 50m butterfly women's 'A' final, Noemie Thomas skipped
her way to a 5th place finish in her warm-up event before her
signature 100 and 200m butterfly races. Meanwhile in the men's 'B'
final, Nick Quenville stroked to a 14th place finish overall.
In the 4x100 Freestyle relay we had several swimmers performing
well, highlighted by Meghan Kwiatkowski on the 'A' women's relay
holding off a hard charging Olympians Swim Club for a 3rd spot and
earning herself a silver dolphin for the podium finish.
Competition continues tomorrow with the prelims sessions from
9am - 1pm, and the finals getting underway at 5:30pm. Finals will
be webcast live on swimming canada's site.
Admission to the event is also free.
