The second morning of prelim swimming at the 2010 Mel Zajac
international was just as eventful for our WDSC swimmers as the
first.
The 100m butterfly saw no surprises as Noemie Thomas claimed an
'A' final spot for tonight's final. Noemie cruised to a 1:02.87,
clinching lane 6 in the final, which again sees US Olympic gold
medalist, Dana Vollmer taking the lead.
In the women's 50m Backstroke Mckenzie Summers and Meghan
Kwiatkowski both snuck into the 'C' final.
Evan Broderick and Luke Reilly continued to storm both the club
record books as well as the finals seeding. The boys set their
age-group club marks and qualified for the 'A' and 'B' final,
respectively. Evan's swim broke a 14 year old WDSC club record held
by Tom Rushton while Luke's performance smashed a 23-year old club
record by 6 seconds. Luke has now almost erased Winskill legend
Derek Francis' name from the record books, the only swim remaining
is the 13-14 boy's 400m Freestyle, long course - set at 4:17.54 in
1987.
In the 50m Freestyle Meghan Kwiatkowski continued her sprinting
ways by snagging a spot in the 'C' final. Jon Kraft posted a best
time and just missed Colin Jones' club mark of 25.12 in a swim-off
for an alternate position. Jon's time in the 50 qualified him for
the upcoming Los Angeles Grand Prix.
Once again the final individual event of the evening was the most
eventful, with Micaela Kwiatkowski, Maya Hiebert, Evan Broderick
and Ryan Anderson all qualified for second swims. Maya Hiebert will
swim in tonight's 'C' final, followed by Micaela Kwiatkowski in the
'B' final. Both boys swim in tonight's 'B' final in a very close
race Ryan took the lead over Evan with 2:28.83 to 2:29.02... both
swims were under the former club record so tonight the boys will
the title.
Finally, the 4x200 Freestyle relay team of Luke Reilly (2:02.92),
Vito Zou (2:06.74), Keith Eriks (2:05.93) and Gabe Lee (2:10.16)
swam under the existing national record but were beaten to the line
by the team from Rapids.
This evening's finals begin at 5:30pm, and will be webcase live on
swimming canada's
site. Admission to the event is also free.
