Mel Zajac International - day 2 finals

The second night of finals at the 2010 Mel Zajac jnr International was even more exciting than the first as more WDSC records fell in fast finals racing.

Getting up right away was Noemie Thomas who swam to 4th place in the 'A' final of the women's 100m butterfly with a scorching fast 1:01.72, just 9-hundreths off her own BC record. Noemie was in a tight race for 2nd and 3rd, while Dana Vollmer the US national record holder took the victory in a new meet record of 58.89.

The 50m backstroke saw both Meghan Kwiatkowski and Mckenzie Summers go significantly faster than their prelims performances with Mckenzie reclaiming the club record at 32.00.

In the men's 200m IM Luke Reilly dropped big time from both his prelim performance and the club record. His time of 2:13.78 took 9 seconds off the existing club record... Luke's swim is the fastest in Canada for his age-group, putting him ahead by a comfortable margin of 4 seconds from his nearest competitor. Meanwhile, in the 'A' final, Evan Broderick put pressure on the podium in a tight race for third, he finished in 5th position, just one second away from the 2nd place podium step, with a massive 3 second PB.

Meghan Kwiatkowski dropped a few hundredths in her 50m freestyle from her prelims performance.

In the most exciting event of the night for our team, the 200m breaststroke, Maya Hiebert took her race out strong, holding on for a solid 2:46.55 in only her second meet ever swimming the event long course. Micaela Kwiatkowski downed former national champion Chelsea Salli with a well pace 2:39.23 - probably her best swim ever, and slightly off her 2:38 from Pan Pac Trials. In the men's 'B' final Ryan Anderson and Evan Broderick had an epic dual going head to head before Evan pipped Ryan at the line, the splits compared;
Evan Broderick: 33.83 1:11.00 (37.17) 1:48.94 (37.94) 2:26.85 (37.91)
Ryan Anderson: 32.96 1:10.08 (37.12) 1:48.17 (38.09) 2:26.90 (38.73)

Ryan broke both the 50m and 100m club records before conceding the 200m record to Evan at the end of the race. Ryan's time ranks him first in Canada heading into the Age-Group Nationals this summer, and puts him just .1 outside of his senior national cut.

Competition continues tomorrow with the prelims sessions from 9am - 1pm, and the finals getting underway at 5:30pm. Finals will be webcast live on swimming canada's site. Admission to the event is also free.
