Day one and two of the 2010 Canadian Age-Group Championships are
on the books with some amazing performances from the Winskill
swimmers.
On Wednesday – the first day of the meet we had two medal
performances in the finals, both bronze in the 200m Backstroke.
Meghan Kwiatkowski took a huge 7-seconds off her
best time over the day to finish in the third place spot in the 14
year old girls category. Luke Reilly also claimed
the podium finish with a 2 second PB in the 14 year old boy’s
event. Sarah Yeo had a huge prelim swim to make it
into the finals for the 13 year old girls, and finished up in
7th place.
In the women’s 50m Breaststroke Taylor
Reilly had an exciting swim-off at the beginning of finals
for the 2nd alternate spot. Taylor finished in a swift
37.51 which was a new club record for 11-12 girls. In the finals
Ryan Anderson posted a swift 31.49 to finish in
4th, just off the podium. Ryan’s time was a new
club mark for senior boys by over a second!
Thursday’s session built on the momentum from
Wednesday. Right out of the gate our 14
year old boys smashed the Canadian record in the 4x 200
Freestyle relay with a 8:19.84 clocking. Vito Zou
led off the team in a 3 second PB with a 2:04.6, Keith Eriks (VPSC)
took over next with a 2:07, before passing the baton to
Gabe Lee who crushed his old best time by
10-seconds with a 2:04.2 split. Luke Reilly
finished the job cruising into a 2:03.0. The boys topped the old BC
and Canadian record by 5 seconds, for each of them it is their
first Provincial record and first National record.
Also setting a BC record in the 4x 200 were the girl’s
13-14 team of Sidney Peake, Meghan Kwiatkowski, Sarah
Yeo and Alicia Chung (VPSC). The girls finished with a
bronze medal in the event.
Luke Reilly followed up his Canadian record
with his first Age-Group National title in the 400m IM. Luke swam
away from the field, leading from start to finish, clearing the
next competitor by four seconds.
Meghan Kwiatkowski clocked a best time in the
100m Freestyle just missing the UBC Dolphins record by .01 in the
event. Her time places her 6th in the final.
Clarissa Tan also made a second swim in the 50m
Backstroke, just missing her PB by .1 in the finals and finishing
in a tie for 6th place.
After the first two days of competition UBC Dolphins are
4th overall at the meet, with some strong events coming
up we look to move up to challenge the top three teams over the
final 4 days of competition.
