Day one of the 2010 Summer Nationals started off very strong for
the biggest contingent of WDSC swimmers to ever attend the senior
national meet.
In the first event of the day both Stefanie Serka and Noemie
Thomas began with best times in the morning. Stefanie swam to a
best time by almost a second, while Noemie took off .37 from her PB
set in Montreal a few weeks ago to grab a spot in the 'A' final for
the night. This was Noemie's first 'A' final ever at senior
nationals, and she did very well by breaking her best time again at
night with a 27.46 which placed her 4th - just .03 seconds off the
podium! Noemie's times in both the prelims and finals were also new
UBC Dolphin records, beating the previous record held by Olympian
Kelly Stefansyn by .11 on the day.
In the 200m Freestyle Elliott Lee broke the WDSC record with a
massive pb of 1:56.13, this was a new senior national qualifying
time for Elliott - his first in a freestyle event, and first LCM
cut - and snatched the record away from teammate Nick Quenville.
In 100m backstroke Mckenzie Summers regained her club record
back after Meghan Kwiatkowski broke the 13-14 girl's mark for both
WDSC and UBC Dolphins last week at age-group championships.
Mckenzie clocked a best time by over a second in the event
finishing at 1:06.45. This was also Mckenzie's first time under the
senior national cut in the 50m pool.
Finally in the 200m Butterfly Evan Broderick clocked another big
best time - by almost 3 seconds - winning his heat decisivly and
finishing at 2:07.29 for a new club record. Evan finished up as the
first alternate, which bodes very well heading into his better
events on days 2 and 4 of the meet.
